Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) is a high-performance class of synthetic rubber known for its exceptional chemical resistance, thermal stability, and sealing integrity in extreme environments. It is widely used in industries like oil & gas, semiconductors, chemical processing, aerospace, and increasingly in utilities and power generation, where durability under aggressive conditions is critical.
What is Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM)?
Perfluoroelastomers are fluoroelastomers (elastomers containing fluorine) that have perfluorinated polymer backbones—similar to PTFE (Teflon®)—which makes them extremely inert.
- Chemical family: Fluoropolymers
- Structure: All hydrogen atoms in the base polymer are replaced by fluorine, resulting in exceptional chemical stability.
Key Properties
| Feature | Benefit |
|---|---|
| High temperature resistance | Typically rated from –10°C up to +327°C (some grades up to 350°C) |
| Broad chemical resistance | Compatible with acids, amines, ketones, esters, fuels, and oxidizers |
| Low outgassing | Ideal for vacuum and cleanroom applications |
| High compression set resistance | Maintains seal integrity over time |
| Flame resistance | Naturally flame-retardant |
Applications in Industry
Oil & Gas / Utilities
- Downhole tools, valve seals, and static/dynamic sealing in chemical injection systems
- Withstands aggressive media like sour gas (H₂S), steam, and hydrocarbons
Chemical Processing
- Reactor vessels, pumps, and mixers in acid or oxidizer-heavy environments
Semiconductor Manufacturing
- Used in vacuum and plasma processing equipment due to ultra-low contamination
Aerospace
- Engine components and fuel systems exposed to jet fuel and high temperatures
Common FFKM Trade Names
| Brand | Manufacturer |
|---|---|
| Kalrez® | DuPont (now Chemours) |
| Simriz® | Freudenberg |
| Chemraz® | Greene Tweed |
| Perlast® | Precision Polymer Engineering (PPE) |
| Isolast® | Trelleborg |
Considerations
- Cost: One of the most expensive elastomer materials—used only where its properties are essential.
- Processing: Requires precise molding and curing processes; typically made into O-rings, gaskets, and custom seals.
In Utilities & Power Applications
In environments like desalination plants, power generation turbines, or chemical dosing systems, FFKMs provide unmatched longevity and safety where standard elastomers (like NBR, EPDM, or even FKM/Viton®) would fail.
