An unexpected increase in vibration puts the maintenance and operations team in a difficult position. Can the equipment continue running? Does it need to be stopped? What should be checked first?

These decisions are harder when the equipment does not have permanent vibration monitoring. A reading taken during an inspection provides useful information, but it may not show whether the condition is stable, getting worse, or changing with the operating load.

At RMT, we support our clients beyond the scheduled vibration survey. When a sudden vibration issue arises, we review the information available, discuss the operating conditions with their team, and advise on the next steps.

Where additional monitoring is needed, we can arrange the supply and temporary installation of wireless vibration sensors, subject to availability and site requirements. This allows us to gather data between inspections and follow how the equipment condition develops.

What emergency monitoring adds

Temporary wireless sensors can help us understand whether a vibration increase is an isolated event or a developing trend. Depending on the sensor capability and monitoring setup, the data can support investigation of changes associated with speed, load, equipment changeover or other operating conditions.

It also provides a way to follow the equipment after an intervention. If alignment has been corrected, a bearing replaced or a structural modification completed, monitoring can help assess whether the improvement is sustained.

The sensor selection matters. The measurement range, frequency capability, data collection interval, mounting arrangement and site connectivity all need to suit the equipment and the suspected problem. Some investigations will still require detailed on-site measurements and specialist diagnostic testing.

The value is in the assessment

Supplying a sensor is one part of the support. The data needs to be assessed in the context of the machine, its history and how it is being operated.

We combine the monitoring results with our detailed vibration analysis to help the client understand what has changed, what may be causing it, and what action is appropriate.

That may mean closer observation, further testing, planned maintenance or a recommendation to stop the equipment. Any decision on continued operation must also consider the equipment’s protection systems, OEM guidance and the site’s operating procedures. Monitoring supports that decision; it does not guarantee that continued operation is safe.

From emergency support to ongoing monitoring

For clients with quarterly vibration analysis contracts, we already have a history of the equipment’s condition. Adding wireless monitoring helps us follow changes between visits and gives us additional information when an unexpected issue develops.

Temporary monitoring can address an immediate concern. Where there is an ongoing need, a permanent wireless installation can complement the quarterly analysis and support predictive maintenance planning.
